Commissioned is the contemporary 1980’s gospel group originally from Detroit, Michigan.
The 6 original members were Fred Hammond, Mitchell Jones, Keith Staten, Karl Reid, Michael Brooks and Michael Williams.
The group formed in 1982, two years after Hammond played bass for The Winans. Keith Staten was invited into the group having been a vocal powerhouse at his father’s church choir since a young age. In 1990, Staten started a solo album, Brooks left the group, which introduced Marvin Sapp, Maxx Frank and Eddie Howard, Jr. to the group. By 1994, Howard left the group, and Williams left a year later.
Fred Hammond pursued a career with the choir Radical For Christ, and was replaced by Montrell Darrett. By 1999, Marcus Cole and Chris Poole became members taking the place of Sapp, Frank and Darrett on the group’s last studio album.
Commissioned recorded 12 albums over a period of seventeen years, and were nominated for Grammy and Stellar awards.
Their most recent Reunion Concert was held in 2022. They continue in their career to work on individual & collaborative music projects.
Their effect on new generations of Gospel, Christian & R&B music is touted as everlasting.
